Cuba Defends Right to Peace in Geneva

Geneva, February 28 (RHC) -- Cuban diplomat Juan Antonio Quintanilla said that peace is the main condition to be able to enjoy human rights, particularly life, when speaking Geneva at the 8th Session of the UN Human Rights Council Advisory Committee.

The Cuban representative said that in order to preserve peace, everything that threatens it, such as war and, particularly, the possibility of using nuclear weapons, needs to be eradicated.

Quintanilla recalled a recent written reflection by the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, entitled "World Peace Hanging by a Thread". In it he analyzes the "political situation surrounding Iran and the associated risks of a nuclear war that involves everyone -regardless of whether one possesses nuclear weapons or not."

The Cuban diplomat stated that in the face of a situation, in which the use of just 100 warheads would lead to a nuclear winter, it is increasingly important to advance in the general and complete disarmament.

Quintanilla said that the fact the world spends more to make a war and than in promoting the right to development is unacceptable.
