Cuban Sports Delegation to London Olympiad Receives National Flag
Havana, June 30 (RHC) The Cuban sports delegation that will participate at the 30th Olympic Games, to take place in London from July 27 to August 12, was given the National Cuban Flag that will represent the island in the event, during a ceremony at Havana’s Jose Marti Memorial.
Vice-president of the Cuban Council of Ministers, Miguel Diaz-Canel handed over the National Ensign to Greco-Roman wrestler Mijain Lopez, Olympic Champ at Beijing 2008 in the 120 kilo category.
The London event will pose a big and complex challenge to face, but the Cuban athletes will compete with the courage, dignity and patriotism that characterize them all, said Diaz-Canel during the ceremony.
The top Cuban government official called on the delegation to follow the example of recently departed boxer Teofilo Stevenson, a three-time Olympic Champ, who rejected those who offered him millions of dollars to leave his country; a selfless sportsman committed to the ideals of his people and his revolution, he said.
The ceremony was attended by the president of the Cuban Olympic Committee, Jose Ramon Fernandez; the member of Cuban Communist Party Central Committee Olga Lidia Tapia, and the president of the Cuban Sports, Physical Education and Recreation Institute, Christian Jimenez.
