Cuba: The Largest Ever Graduation of Physicians
Havana, July 11 (RHC-ACN) -- Cuba graduated this year the largest number ever of physicians, as a total of 11,000 new doctors completed their professional training.
According to Granma newspaper, the total of graduates includes 5,315 Cubans and 5,694 professionals from 59 other countries.
Graduation ceremonies are scheduled in Eastern Guantanamo and Havana provinces, on July 18th, and in Ciego de Avila and Artemisa provinces, on July 24th.
The countries with the largest number of doctors trained in Cuba are Bolivia (over 1400), Peru (453), Nicaragua (429), Ecuador (308), Colombia (175) and Guatemala (170). The number of new Cuban doctors nearly doubles the figure that existed on the island before the 1959 Revolution.
However, the total figure of Cuban and foreign health professionals, who will graduate this school year reaches 32,171. The figure also includes graduates in such specialties as dentistry, psychology, nursing and health technologies.
Cuba’s cooperation with other nations in the field of health also includes the training of more than 29,000 medical students in countries like Venezuela, Bolivia, Angola, Tanzania, Guinea Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Gambia and East Timor, according to Granma newspaper. Cuba has graduated nearly 109,000 doctors from 1959 up to 2010.
