Turtle Festival in Western Cuba
Experts and residents in the Western province of Pinar del Rio are preparing for the first festival in Cuba dedicated to turtles, to be held on May 11th and 12th at the site of the turtles spawning. Eliseo Luis Peraza, coordinator of the initiative, told Prensa Latina that the headquarters of the festival is the coastal town of La Coloma, near a group of small islands where this endangered species live.
Adjacent to the San Felipe keys, south of the archipelago, La Coloma will host local environmentalists, fishermen and people interested in protecting turtles. During the festival, sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund and other related organizations, children, youth and adults can meet and discuss the threats to which sea turtles are exposed and how to prolong their existence, said Peraza.
