Important Contribution by Biological Products Enterprise to Local Agriculture
The Havana-based Biological and Pharmaceutical Products Enterprise (LABIOFAM) has begun producing over one thousand tons of bio-fertilizers and other biological agents to contribute to the Cuban agriculture sector’s strategy aimed at replacing imports and decreasing the use of chemicals.
In a recent press conference, LABIOFAM senior specialist Yordanis Peña Alvarez said that her company’s contribution will help decrease imports of biological products by between 10 and 15 percent.
The director of the Cuban Vegetable Health Institute, Emilio
Fernandez, stressed the effectiveness of bio-pesticides, which are also included in the production program, while bio-fertilizers help increase agricultural yield by some 40 percent and they also improve the quality of soils.
The work of LABIOFAM Enterprise is supported by intense and significant research and the production of biological and pharmaceutical products over the past 20 years. At present, the institution meets 98 percent of the country’s demand of veterinary products.
