US-Cuba Baseball Meet Kicks off Today in Havana

With the first of 5 baseball games to be held Thursday evening at Havana’s “Latinoamericano” stadium, Cuba and the United States resume their bilateral meets in this sport, which had not taken place for the past 16 years.

altThe US athletes arrived in Havana by midday and rested a bit before tonight’s game, according to the Cuban Baseball Federation.

Meanwhile, Cuba announced a 36-player pre-selection, headed by manager Victor Mesa, though the team will be reduced to 24 athletes, and with that number of players Cuba will contest the traditional Haarlem Baseball Week, July 13-22, in Holland.

The US-Cuba baseball meets began in the late 1970s and they were interrupted n 1996. This week’s event is considered an important training period for the Cuban team to face the 3rd World Baseball Classic, to take place in March 2013.
