Foreign Ministers of Russia and China Reaffirm Opposition to Use of Force in Syria
Moscow, March 1 (RHC)-- Russia and China are opposed to any attempts made by third countries to encourage either side of the Syrian conflict to pursue their goals forcefully. The countries' foreign ministers, Sergei Lavrov and Yang Jiechi, made the statement during a phone conversation on Wednesday, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The foreign ministry statement issued in Moscow says that Lavrov and Jiechi discussed the situation in Syria in detail and stressed their countries' unified stance against any direct or indirect encouragement for the use of force.
The statement adds that Moscow and Beijing call on all foreign parties concerned about a peaceful settlement of the Syrian crisis to create favorable conditions for starting a comprehensive dialogue between Syrian authorities and the opposition.
During the phone call, both ministers expressed their readiness to continue close contacts on the Syrian issue and coordinate their countries' positions at the UN and other international forums.
They also voiced their satisfaction over the results of the referendum held last Sunday on a new Syrian constitution, which gained the support of the majority of the people, stressing the need to implement reforms and parliamentary elections.
