Syrian Government Reiterates Support for Kofi Annan’s Peacekeeping Mission

Damascus, March 15 (RHC)-- One year after the current crisis erupted in Syria, the government says it will contribute to the success of the peacekeeping mission of UN and Arab League envoy Kofi Annan, as well as proposals by Russia and China.

Syria's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Jihad Maqdisi, said: "We are committed to the success of the mission undertaken by Kofi Annan and promote efforts to remove obstacles to a political solution."

Maqdisi said the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad has responded to the concerns of the special envoy, which aim to bring a political solution to the situation and contribute to the reform process in the country.

The foreign ministry spokesperson said that Damascus hopes to "mobilize all efforts to achieve peace, which must be guaranteed through dialogue and reform."  But, Maqdisi pointed out, the success of Annan's mission will depend on the extent that others cooperate with him.

In related news, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday called on both the Syrian government and the opposition to cooperate with the special envoy’s peace mission in Syria.
