Kofi Annan Announces Cease-Fire in Syria
Geneva, April 5 (RHC) Kofi Annan, U.N. and Arab League Special Envoy to Syria said there will be a complete cease-fire between the Syrian government and the opposition in the 48 hours after April 10th.
Ahmad Fawzi, Annan´s spokesman, said “What we are expecting for April 10th is that the Syrian government finalizes the withdrawal of their troops. Starting at that time, a period of 48 hours will begin, in which there will be a total cease of all violence from all sides, including the government and the Syrian opposition.”
The Syrian government had informed Kofi Annan that they have already begun the withdrawal of troops in three zones; Deraa, Idlib, and Zabadani. Fawzi also said a team headed by Norwegian Major-General Robert Mood will arrive in Damascus to discuss the eventual deployment of a U.N. supervision and monitoring mission.
