Yemeni Army Proceeds with Offensive against Al-Qaeda Radicals
Sanaa, April 12 (RHC) Yemeni military forces proceeded with their offensive against radical Islamist militias in the Southern province of Abyan, supported by drone attacks by the U.S. military that have caused 14 deaths over the last several hours.
Spokespeople of President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi and the military admitted that land units from the 111 Blindala Brigade coordinated with other branches of the army and the U.S. Air Force in new operations in the region.
On Wednesday the army reported at least 56 deaths of Al-Qaeda members, and 18 captured, including the prisoners from an attack on a military base in Abyan last weekend. The Islamist extremists claim to have caused 50 soldier deaths, and that they acquired many weapons during the combat. Leaders of Al-Qaeda also assumed responsibility for an attack yesterday in the province of Mareb, where 8 soldiers and 3 insurgents were killed.
