Venezuelans See President Hugo Chavez as Only Socialist Candidate
Caracas, May 10 (RHC) -- Director of the polling firm GIS-XXI, Jesse Chacón, said President Hugo Chavez has changed the political scene in Venezuela and most people see him as the only candidate of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).
According to the representative of the social research group, one of the mistakes made by the campaign advisory team of Henrique Capriles, candidate of the opposition Democratic Unity Coalition, was trying to create a candidate like President Chavez.
In this regard, Chacon said that Chavez and Capriles are two completely different people, and that enormous difference conflicts with reality.
Chacon also found that another issue that exasperates the opposition is the president’s strong leadership which has transformed the national political scene.
Speaking during the TV program ‘Contragolpe’, broadcast on the state-run channel Venezolana de Television, the official recalled that the latest survey released by the GIS-XXI firm revealed Chavez’s approval rating stands at 66 percent. Chacon said the president’s popularity is linked to his respect for the promises made during the 1998 election campaign.
The survey, including 9,300 respondents distributed proportionally to the population of each state, showed that at least 57 percent of the people intend to vote for President Hugo Chavez on the October 7th elections, while only 21 percent support opposition candidate Henrique Capriles.
