6.4-magnitude earthquake hits northern Argentina

Buenos Aires, May 28, (PRESSTV), -- A strong earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale has jolted an area in northern Argentina, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The quake took place at 2.07 a.m.local time Monday and was centered about 116 kilometers east-southeast of Santiago del Esterocity, the provincial capital.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the temblor, local police said.

On March 5, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake also shook northern Argentina, about 112 kilometers east-southeast of Santiago del Estero.

The Argentinean city of Santiago del Etero has a population of 245,000.
