Chile: New Raid in Mapuche Community
Santiago de Chile, June 8 (NNN-PL-RHC) -- Chilean police raided a Mapuche community in the Araucania region, leaving several people injured, including two children.
According to the Radio Cooperativa de Chile station, at least seven people were injured in the raid in the town of Wente Winkul Mapu, in the community of Ercilla.
The local spokesman, Daniel Melinao, denounced police violence against Mapuche children. In comments to Radio Bio Bio, Melinao said the injured included an old man and two children, who were taken to a hospital. Three policemen were reported injured and two people were detained.
The police raid was aimed at arresting a citizen accused of attempted murder against a property owner in October 2011, according to Prensa Latina news agency.
