Seven Hopefuls Expected to Take Part in Venezuela’s Election

Caracas, June 12 (RHC) -- The top authority of Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) Socorro Hernandez said that at least seven candidates will take part in the October 7th presidential race.

Hernandez explained that only Maria Bolivar, in addition to President Hugo Chavez and his main opposition candidate, Henrique Capriles Radonski, completed the registration of their candidacy within the stipulated period, which ended at midnight.

In comments to the local TV program ‘Toda Venezuela’, Hernandez said that four other candidates still have to submit several documents before the CNE can confirm their nominations. The list includes Yoel Acosta Chirinos, Orlando Chirinos, Luis Reyes and Rafael Uzcategui, who have until tomorrow, Wednesday, to complete these requirements.

Both Maria Bolivar’s nomination, as well as that of the other four candidates, was backed by small political parties.

The electoral authority revealed that seven other candidates had also begun proceedings to register at their own initiative, but have not yet submitted the required documents or met all necessary requirements.
