Impeachment of Lugo Challenged in Paraguay
Asuncion, August 4 (RHC)-- Attorneys for Fernando Lugo will challenge the political trial and impeachment he was subjected to at an international court of law, after the president of the Congress threatened to limit his electoral rights if that process would not be recognized.
Two appeals on the grounds of unconstitutionality against Lugo's political trial were presented at the Supreme Court of Justice, which rejected one and sent the other to the National Congress for its opinion before making a decision.
The president of the National Congress, Jorge Oviedo, has warned that if the impeached president does not withdraw his appeal on the grounds of unconstitutionality, his right to any electoral candidature will be limited in the future.
Oviedo stressed that the only way Lugo can run as a candidate is if the political trial is recognized, and gave no importance to the request made by the Supreme Court of Paraguay.
