Chilean Mapuche People Condemn Ruling Favoring Police Officer
Havana, August 20 (RHC) -- Representatives of the Mapuche people of Chile condemned the decision of a court martial that overturned the prison sentence against a police officer, charged with the murder of laborer Jaime Mendoza, three years ago.
After the verdict was made public, the Mapuche communities in the country also announced protests against what they described as a judicial process full of irregularities, while the family of the murdered teenager said they would appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court.
Jaime Mendoza was shot on August 12th, 2009, when special police forces conducted an operation to evict the Ercilla community, in the Chilean Araucanian region.
